Bilingualism, a great advantage
Is English your first language? Would you like to perfect your French?
You have two choices: you can either do your studies completely in English or take advantage of life in Ottawa and at the University of Ottawa to continue improving your French. Not only is the bilingual environment here at the University of Ottawa just right for doing so, but also there is no shortage of ways for you to get your French up to speed.
The Faculty of Art's Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI) offers you a variety of possibilities: courses, self-learning, second language monitors.
French as a second language courses
Choose from among a variety of French as a second language (FSL) courses that will help you improve your writing, grammar and pronunciation skills.
Immersion courses in French
Register in a university disciplinary course in French (for example, in history or philosophy) with a language-learning support component that will help you better understand the course material. Take one immersion course…get credit for two courses!
Second language certification
Get official recognition for your knowledge of both official languages—an important advantage in today's job market! Once you have completed the certification course designed especially for you to evaluate and improve your second language proficiency using diagnostic exercises and a series of formal tests, you will receive an official certificate stating your level of proficiency in your second official language.
Disciplinary courses taught in French
Do you like challenges? Dare to take some of your courses in French! The University of Ottawa's policy on bilingualism allows you to complete your assignments in French or English, regardless of the language of instruction in the class.
French is not your first language? You took French immersion in high school?
Unique to the University of Ottawa, the French Immersion stream was created for students like you who wish to improve their French-language skills while studying in the program of their choice. This allows you to do part of your university studies in French. The French Immersion stream is offered in 17 Arts disciplines.
