Dr. David Staines - New Director of Institute of Canadian Studies

The first week of September the new Acting Director of Canadian Studies, David Staines, will be in Beijing sponsoring a symposium on Canadian Literature in China, this in collaboration with the Canadian Embassy there. Participants include Canadian writers and critics, Chinese translators of Canadian literature, Canadianists in China, and graduate students involved with the study and teaching of Canadian literature.

The symposium will highlight the accord he has created with Zhao Fa, a prolific translator of Canaidan literature in Canada. Together they weill organize the translation of the all the titles in the New Canadian Library, a series published by McClleland and Stewart for which Staines has served as general editor for the past twenty years.

Dr. Staines, Professor of English, will serve as Acting Director through June, 2009. He is a renowned Canadianist with an international reputation, author of more than fifteen books on Canada. His edition of The Letters of Stephan Leacock (2006) was picked by the Globe and Mail as one of the best hundred books of the year. He was awarded the Lorne Pierce Medal for Canadian criticism by the Royal Society of Canada. He was elected to the Society in 2005.
