Joël Beddows was recognized as best director for Swimming in the Shallows, which was also designated as best Anglophone production of the year while Jean Stéphane Roy was recognized as best director for Les Médecins de Molière, which was also designated as best Francophone production of the year. Congratulations!

Professor France Martineau of the Département de français has received a major $2.5 million grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) in support of a large-scale study on francophones in North America.

The Faculty of Arts is very proud to announce that three of its professors, Emma Anderson, Peter Bischoff and Lucie Joubert, are among the four finalists selected for the Canada Prize in the Social Sciences (in French). The Canada Prize honours the best scholarly books in Canada.
- Professors in the Faculty of Arts were remarkably successful in the last Standard Research Grants competition at the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). I am proud to announce that of the 54 projects submitted, 25 projects were funded for a total amount of $ 1 534 390. Our success rate of 46% is well above the national success rate which is at 29.8% this year. This sum can be added to the $2.5 million which was recently awarded to France Martineau for her Major Collaborative Research Initiative.
Congratulations to all of the researchers who make our Faculty an environment of excellence. Congratulations also to Lori Burns and Lesley Strutt who, through their mentoring, made this competition a success.
- The University of Ottawa has recognized Douglas Moggach as Distinguished University Professor. Professor Moggachis the holder of the University Research Chair in Political Thought (Faculty of Social Sciences) and a professor in the Department of Philosophy (Faculty of Arts). The Distinguished University Professor title is conferred to him in recognition of exceptional scholarly achievement, pre-eminence in his field of knowledge and a solid teaching record. Congratulations.
- Professor Heather Murray from the Department of History won the 2011 Lawrence W. Levine Award for her first book entitled “Not In This Family". This award is given by the Organization of American Historians for the best book in American cultural history. Congratulations.
- Professor David Staines receives the Order of Ontario.

- Emeritus professor Marcel Trudel dies
The Faculty of Arts is saddened by the passing of Marcel Trudel an eminent historian who specialized in New France and former Department of History professor. The entire Faculty community is united in offering its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Trudel.

Seymour Mayne's selected poems rendered into Hebrew by Moshe Dor has been chosen to receive the J.I. Award for the Translation of a Book on a Jewish Theme. This major collection by the poet is entitled Fly Off into the Strongest Light: Selected Poems (Keshev Publishing House).

Daniel Castillo Durante, professor in the Département de français, is one of three finalists for the literary prize, the Christine-Dumitriu-van-Saanen Award. The winner will be announced December 8, 2010 at the Toronto French Book Fair.

Anna Lewis of the Department of English is one of this year's Polanyi Prize recipients.

Dean Antoni Lewkowicz was recently named Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society in recognition of his contributions to research on permafrost. He also received a grant for the Society Expedition of the Year to support fieldwork on the impact of climate change on permafrost in the southern Yukon and northern British Columbia. During the expedition, Dr. Lewkowicz was accompanied by two students from the Department of Geography, Christina Miceli and Maxime Duguay.

Professor Béatrice Craig was awarded the Sir John A. Macdonald Prize by the Canadian Historical Association for her book: Backwoods Consumers and Homespun Capitalists: The Rise of a Market Culture in Eastern Canada, judged to have made the most significant contribution to an understanding of the Canadian past.

Jean-Pierre Wallot, 1935 – 2010
The Faculty of Arts is saddened by the passing of Jean-Pierre Wallot, renowned historian and former National Archivist. Mr. Wallot was director of the Centre for Research on French Canadian Culture from July 2000 to December 2006. The entire Faculty community is united in offering its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Wallot.
A memorial service will be held on September 11, 2010 at 2 p.m. in l'Église Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, 45 Prévost Street in Gatineau. Friends may visit at the Coopérative funéraire de l'Outaouais, 95 Cité-des-Jeunes Blvd. in Gatineau, on Friday September 10, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturday, September 11, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Barrhaven’s Catholic Secondary School to be named in honour of Pierre Savard a renowned historian
Le Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est announced that the first French-language secondary school in Barrhaven has been named after the historian and much-missed colleague at the Department of History, Pierre Savard, a model for young Franco-Ontarians in search of a cultural identity!

- Three new Research Chairs in Canadian Francophonie have been awarded in 2006. The program aims to solidify the posotion of the University of Ottawa as a leader in the field of research on Canadian and North-American francophonie.
