In general, I am interested in the religious diversity manifested during the Late Antique period in both the Roman and Sasanian Empires. As such, I work toward a holistic view of the circumstances that led to some traditions becoming dominant and others marginal during this period of immense cultural, ethnic, and linguistic variety. More specifically, my research focuses on two sets of Coptic manuscripts, the Manichaean codices from Medinet Madi and the Gnostic texts from Nag Hammadi. Both corpora open a fascinating, albeit fragmentary, window on the various and often surprising ways in which religious traditions intertwined in antiquity. In addition, I am strong advocate of the importance of languages and methodology in the study of this wonderfully rich and formative period.
