Theodore de Bruyn’s research has delved into various aspects of the discourse and practice of Christianity in Late Antiquity. A recurring interest is the continuity and innovation that one can see as existing discourses and practices are adapted by Christians. One of Dr. de Bruyn’s current research projects is a study, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, of Christian protective charms in Late Antiquity – their emergence, their characteristics, their debts to ambient influences. He is also preparing a translation, with introduction and notes, of the first extant Latin commentary on Paul’s Letter to the Romans, composed in the mid-fourth century by an anonymous writer now referred to as Ambrosiaster.
