Karin Schlapbach currently works on a book-length study of the attitudes to the theater in the Roman empire (second to fourth centuries). A philologist by training, she cultivates a special interest in cultural history and philosophy. She is the author of a commentary on the first book of Augustine’s dialogue against the Sceptics, a text that examines various ways of attaining knowledge, most prominently among them divination. She has also written on the role of landscape and solitude in the context of ancient ideas about literary production. She has contributed to a number of reference works, in particular The New Pauly, Augustinus Lexikon and Reallexikon für Antike und Christentum.
