John Osborne is an historian of material culture and urban topography, with a specific focus on the city of Rome in the period ca. 500-1100 CE. His publications include studies of late antique and early medieval mural paintings and sculpture, from sites such as the churches of San Clemente and S. Maria Antiqua in Rome, the Pianabella basilica at Ostia, and the papal ‘domusculta’ at Mola di Monte Gelato; an examination of the function of the Roman catacombs in the period after the 5th century; drawings of late antique and medieval antiquities made in the 17th century for the ‘Museo cartaceo’ of Cassiano dal Pozzo; and the reception history of ancient statues and buildings in the Middle Ages. He is currently preparing a study of the medieval understanding of the Vatican obelisk, as well as a number of book projects.
